BURØ SIMPELT is an architecture and interior design practice working between Istanbul and Lisbon.

Introduction

Büro Simpelt is an architecture and interior design practice founded in 2020 by architects Yiğitcan Ülkücü and Nazlı Ünsal. Working between Istanbul and Lisbon, the studio approaches architecture and interiors as one continuous spatial discipline, from the organisation of a building to the material encounter of a joint, handle or piece of furniture.

Its work begins with the site, the client and the conditions already present. Rather than applying a fixed visual language, the studio develops each project through observation, dialogue and construction. Simplicity is understood not as emptiness or a commercial image of minimalism, but as clarity: a calm and legible framework in which life can accumulate over time.

Across residential, healthcare and emerging hospitality projects, Büro Simpelt seeks to create spaces that are carefully reasoned, materially honest and capable of remaining meaningful beyond the first impression.

The Practice

Design was a shared language between Yiğitcan Ülkücü and Nazlı Ünsal long before it became a shared practice. Friends since their first year at architecture school, they travelled to see buildings and exhibitions, spoke constantly about design, and developed their experience in other offices before establishing Büro Simpelt in Istanbul in February 2020. Their first commission was the interior of a triplex house in Bodrum, begun just before the global lockdowns.

The name grew from a series of visits to Copenhagen that began in 2014. What stayed with them was not a visual style, but a culture in which simplicity, craftsmanship and everyday use appeared closely connected. The work of designers and makers remained visible and valued. “Simpelt” became a reminder that simplicity is not emptiness; it is the result of understanding what is necessary.

From the beginning, the studio also took responsibility for construction. Contracting early projects, a house in Ankara and a clinic in Istanbul, made the distance between drawing and building impossible to ignore. It established an approach in which constructability, material knowledge and dialogue with craftspeople are part of design itself. Today, the practice moves between Istanbul and Lisbon. Istanbul has taught speed, adaptation and improvisation; Lisbon has introduced patience and a slower form of observation. The studio works between these complementary energies rather than adopting a single geographic identity.

Yiğitcan Ülkücü studied architecture at Istanbul Technical University, where he later continued his graduate studies in the Architectural Design Computing programme. His research focused on the spatial improvement and transformation of industrial buildings and was presented at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto in 2019.

Before establishing Büro Simpelt, he worked with several architecture and design practices, gaining experience in residential and healthcare projects. He co-founded the studio with Nazlı Ünsal in 2020. Alongside his architectural practice, he has taught as an adjunct instructor at Özyeğin University.

Junior architect

Poyraz Dursun graduated with honours in architecture from Özyeğin University in 2024. During her studies, she spent a semester at Politecnico di Milano and expanded her education through additional coursework in interior architecture. She completed internships both on a construction site and in an architectural office, gaining experience in the relationship between design and execution. At Büro Simpelt, she contributes to design development, critical discussions and project production.

Approach

Four principles that guide the development of the studio’s work.

01 — Begin with the site

Every project starts with a visit. The studio studies the building, its surroundings, light, materials, existing traces and the ways people already move through it. A site is never treated as something that belongs only to its owner; every intervention also participates in a street, neighbourhood or landscape.

02 — Design through dialogue

Clients, consultants, craftspeople and team members are active participants in the work. Questions and criticism are used to test decisions rather than defend fixed positions. The aim is not to impose a predetermined image, but to arrive at a solution that can be understood, built and supported by everyone involved.

03 — Make construction part of design

Constructability is not a technical correction applied after the idea. It helps form the idea. Materials are selected for their character, ageing, availability and performance, while details are judged by how well they endure. The studio values honest materials and craftsmanship that arises from necessity.

04 — Leave room for life

Simplicity is understood as clarity, not emptiness. The architecture provides a calm and legible framework without prescribing how people should live. A project becomes complete when clients introduce their own objects, habits and memories — and when the atmosphere of the space gives them a reason to return.
